NEC's PASOLINK, a small microwave transmitter enables broader communication access from cities to remote areas and around the world. [ 04:25 ]
Egypt, the Land of the Pharaohs.
With 78 million people, it is one of the fastest growing countries in Africa,
And, like the rest of the developing world – many here dream about being a part of the information revolution.
Mobinil is trying to fulfill that dream. As Egypt's leading mobile telecommunications operator it has more than 15 million customers, and a passionate determination to double that within a few years.
Mohamed Azmy BSS & Transmission Manager Mobinil;
When we launched, our slogan was mobile in every hand
You cannot imagine that only some years ago, we weren’t using any mobiles. Today, to the extent that everyone is depending on their mobile, it’s really impressive.
THE CHALLENGE
Demand for Mobinil services was high, but real challenges stood in the way.
All telecommunication signals stream through a complex cable network deep underground – this is called the data backbone.
When this backbone is connected to a mobile phone tower, users within its range can pick up a reception signal.
Mobinil’s challenge was how to extend the data backbone to areas difficult to reach, both in the city and in the countryside.
Expanding the underground network was costly, slow and in some cases, just not allowed.
Mohamed Zeinhom General Manager NEC Cairo;
If you start to dig in the road so you stop, totally stop the traffic, so that’s why the the government absolutely refused any digging in the road now.
Mobinil had to find a more cost-effective simple solution.
THE SOLUTION
The answer was Pasolink: NEC's top of the line microwave transmission device.
Using Pasolink, Mobinil can now transfer communication data from the underground backbone to the skies overhead, bypassing the need for construction below.
A single Pasolink unit can be networked together with other units to form a daisychain of communication, a virtual data backbone.
Mobinil can then connect this Pasolink network to a mobile transmitter, ensuring everyone has a clear and reliable way to stay in touch.
The problem was solved.
THE TECHNOLOGY
One of the few products still manufactured exclusively in Japan today, Pasolink embodies the culmination of almost a century of NEC’s core technology development.
Its beauty is in its seemingly simple yet remarkably durable and reliable design.
Pasolink units are so sturdy; they are built to withstand extreme temperatures - from the blistering 40 degree heat in the desert to a chilling minus 4 degrees at night - in almost any kind of weather.
Hiroya Nakata General Manager Global Network Division NEC Corporation;
Reliability of Pasolink is outstanding. We could say that the possibility of failure is about once in one hundred years. This figure is ten times better than that of the industry average.
Just as impressive is the strength of a Pasolink signal. A single PASOLINK unit can transmit a reliable signal more than 50 km away by line of sight.
The fact that it is easy, cost-effective and simple to install has enabled Mobinil to extend their network rapidly.
Mohamed Azmy BSS & Transmission Manager Mobinil;
Simply speaking, instead of taking days to install a microwave link, we're now in the range of hours, so in the same day we can have the new link up and running.
THE BENEFITS
Thanks to Pasolink, Mobinil is now able to empower consumers and businesses across Egypt. .
From the markets of Cairo, where bazaar merchants can now clinch a bargain price before it's too late.
To the luxury resorts of the Red Sea, where better mobile coverage now allows tourists broader access to phone calls, even mobile internet...
Pasolink and its unique benefits are enjoyed by users the world over - a 21st century gift of instant communication that even the ancients would probably approve.Pasolink and its unique benefits are enjoyed by users the world over - a 21st century gift of instant communication that even the ancients would probably approve.
Egypt is one of Africa's fastest-growing countries. With a population of some 78 million and a thriving economy, it is a land where many people are eager to join and participate in the global information revolution.
Mobinil, Egypt's leading mobile telecommunications operator, is trying to help them do just that. It has more than 15 million customers and is determined to double its customer base within a few years.
The vast majority of telecommunication signals are streamed through an underground cable network – the data backbone. But expanding that underground network can be costly, slow, and – in some situations – a logistical nightmare. In the case of Cairo, the sheer volume of traffic in some areas makes it impossible to do the roadwork necessary to lay and service underground cables because the resulting congestion would seriously impact commerce and people's daily lives.
Confronted with this seemingly insurmountable problem, Mobinil called on NEC and its top-of-the-line microwave transmission device, PASOLINK. PASOLINK can form a virtual backbone by being networked with other units to form a daisy chain of communication. It was the perfect solution, enabling Mobinil to assure high-quality transmission of signals from any telecom network – without disrupting traffic.
Today, PASOLINK is one of the few NEC products still manufactured exclusively in Japan. Incorporating some of the company's most proven technologies, it is manufactured to the highest standards of quality. Thanks to stringent quality control, the ruggedly constructed units are able to withstand deserts’ temperature extremes that can range from blistering 40°C highs in the day to -4℃ lows at night.
Hiroya Nakata, General Manager of the Global Network Division at NEC, explains how significant this advantage is. "The reliability of PASOLINK is outstanding. We could say that the possibility of failure is about once in one hundred years. This figure is ten times better than that of the industry average."
The signal put out by PASOLINK units is also so strong that it can be received with clarity up to 50 kilometers away. The units are also easy and extremely cost-effective to install.
As Mobinil BSS & Transmission Manager Mohamed Azmy puts it, "Simply speaking, instead of taking days to install a microwave link, we're now in the range of hours. So in the same day we can have a new link up and running."
With PASOLINK, Mobinil has successfully extended the area where people can enjoy mobile phones across the country. From the markets of Cairo to the luxury resorts of the Red Sea, better signal coverage provides residents and visitors alike with broader access to telephone and mobile internet services.
PASOLINK's unique benefits are not limited to Mobinil and its Egyptian customers, though. They are being enjoyed by users all over the world, however remote they may be, empowering them and ensuring they always have a clear and reliable way to stay in touch.
